An expected announcement
The Supreme Court has been back in the news since Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, 83, officially announced his retirement on January 27 when he joined President Joe Biden in the White House. Biden will now begin selecting the next Supreme Court justice, laying the groundwork to deliver on his campaign promise to appoint the first black woman to the High Court. The president confirmed this commitment on January 27, describing such a historic meeting as “long overdue”. Biden is approaching his own deadline to nominate candidates "by the end of February." According to CNN, the screening process for potential candidates is heating up. Biden reportedly spent several nights reviewing filing cabinets related to previous potential case drafts. Breyer's successor must be confirmed by the Senate. The Senate is currently split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, but technically the Democrats have a majority because Vice President Kamala Harris can sever all ties to her vote. Breyer is the second most senior judge. His retirement will begin at the beginning of the summer, at the end of his current mandate: who knows if he will bet himself online on his successor, as the saying goes “Only in America”!
